It’s basically all of the local food trucks in a big circle with live music. The trucks ranged from ice cream and cupcakes to grilled cheese, to macaroni and cheese, to italian, to hot dogs, to Korean tacos. Basically everything in between as well. It had potential to be fantastic. I wasn’t able to make it up there until about six thirty because of work so we didn’t stay for very long. The next one on July 13th I will be sure to spend the entire day with a big group of people. This one was last minute and riding Branch Avenue metro after dark is never a good idea for two girls. My absolute favorite thing that we tried was a lemon cupcake. I’m not normally big on icing but everything about this cupcake, especially the fresh lemon zest was perfect. I wasn’t very impressed with Takorean BUT I give them the benefit of the doubt. Their line was extremely long so perhaps they were just rationing. ( a friend who had had them earlier in the day loved it ) so I’m going to do some homework and add food trucks to my list of friends on Facebook so that the text time I am wondering around DC I will know where to find one for a quick meal. I will make sure that for my next Truckaroo I go into more detail :)

"The FDA still cannot honestly assure the public that milk is safe."

“The FDA still cannot honestly assure the public that milk is safe.”

- Ted Weiss (via officialteamgreen)

Photo

The Impulsive Farmer: Companion plants pt2: herb gardens

The Impulsive Farmer: Companion plants pt2: herb gardens:
squeoo:

Anybody that has a composting bin or compost pile at their house knows that old apple cores, banana peels and potato skins can be composted.
So, I had a gift card for a restaurant called Sushiko for $100.00 in D.C. so I invited my friend her boyfriend and my boyfriend to go with me. I was overwhelmed with excitement .. of course trying a new restaurant and not having to pay for a thing. I didn’t get pictures of everything but there were a few things that really stood out. We each ordered a different a soup or a salad, so that we could all try a little bit of everything. I loved the Smoked Mussel and Eggplant Miso soup. I’m not sure if you guys know but Miso is one of my favorite things along with eggplant and mussels.. I could not resist. Miso is commonly used in Japanese cuisine and is in fact a staple in Japan. It is soy beans fermented with rice and aspergillus oryzae, which is a fungus. It is very a very salty paste. (delicious) You can use it in soups, broths, sauces, slaws, just about anything really. I really enjoyed their seaweed salad. Now, I love seaweed salads no matter what but this one was especially good. There was a mixture of the standard seaweed salad that most sushi places have, actual seaweed and mixed greens. I loved it, and it was dressed with some sort of miso/ginger/soy/wasabi dressing. It was quite wonderful.

We also ordered baby octopus which was teriyaki glazed. IT had a wasabi and teriyaki sauce with a small baby green and julienned radish salad. Over all it was good, but I wouldn’t order it again. The sauce was a little to sweet and overwhelming.

The sushi that we ordered was all delicious (to me) The first picture above is an eel and avocado roll which was one of my favorites. We also ordered spicy scallop, tuna cilantro and jalapeno, spicy crunchy tuna, and blue crab California roll. There were mixed feelings about the tuna cilantro and jalapeno roll. I loved it, and wanted more where as the two guys didn’t want to swallow it. I love fresh herbs and cilantro is one of my favorites. (I also love raw fish especially tuna) I can imagine that to a person who isn’t very fond of raw fish or cilantro because of the texture or how strong cilantro can be I can imagine that it wasn’t easy to eat. BUT I would make that particular roll for myself any day.

When it came to desert time they ordered desert and I ordered sake and soy marinated tuna nigiri. Which I was really happy with.

I did most of the ordering for the table and had a great time. I would love to eat there again but probably will try a restaurant that I have heard great things about next Sticky Rice because looking at the menu there is a roll with goat cheese in it.. and I am in love already. I will be making in the next few weeks. I plan on ordering green tobiko which is green flying fish roe (my new love) Usually seasoned with wasabi soon and want to try some interesting combinations including beets and goat cheese.

Strict human vegetarianism is not a natural choice but a culturally induced adaptation.
At the same time, there is also no doubt that current rates of meat eating in affluent societies are excessive when judged from both environmental and health perspectives. Moreover, their simple extension to a large part of the modernizing world would make all the attendant problems only worse. More efficient feeding and better environmental management can go only so far in reducing the negative impacts of high meat consumption: if meat is to claim a decidedly positive role in food production and in healthy diets, then its per capita intakes should be reduced from the highest rates now prevailing throughout the affluent world, and the prevailing ways of its production should be reformed.”

- Vaclav Smil (Eating Meat: Evolution, Patterns, and Consequences)

gardenup:

Some years ago two nutrition experts went grocery shopping. For a dollar, Adam Drewnowski and S. E. Specter could purchase 1,200 calories of potato chips or cookies or just 250 calories worth of carrots. It was merely one example of how an unhealthy diet is cheaper than a healthy one. This price difference did not spring into existence by force of any natural laws but largely because of antiquated agricultural policies. Public money is working at cross-purposes: backing an overabundance of unhealthful calories that are flooding our supermarkets and restaurants, while also battling obesity and the myriad illnesses that go with it. It is time to align our farm policies with our health policies.
